Fern Taylor hand-builds each Checkerboard Dish using nerikomi, a traditional Japanese technique of layering coloured clays so the pattern runs all the way through the piece rather than sitting on the surface. Nothing is painted on. Every square of the checkerboard is clay itself, dyed and worked into natural off-white stoneware, then built up slowly and revealed as the form takes shape.

A proper do-everything dish. Use it for serving dips or butter at the table, for keeping trinkets, rings or hairbands by the bed, or for resting incense cones. Finished with a gloss glaze that gives it a soft shine. Colourways vary with each batch, so choose from the designs shown.

Because of the nature of nerikomi, no two are ever the same. Your dish will be entirely its own, shaped by the unpredictability of the process, which is rather the point.

Fern Taylor is a ceramicist specialising in Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese technique that involves layering coloured clays to create intricate, patterned surfaces. Fern's practice is rooted in a celebration of colour, pattern, and composition—qualities that stem from her background in painting, which she studied at university before transitioning into ceramics. This shift from two-dimensional to three-dimensional making was initially driven by a desire to work more intuitively with material and form, using Nerikomi as a means to explore the intersection of pattern, repetition, and the unpredictability of process. Each piece is built slowly, allowing the organic patterns to take shape.
